Modern American Bridge Bidding

Modern American Bidding Box

Bridge Bulletin - The Bidding Box

The monthly column in the ACBL bridge bulletin is a fun, regular feature. It focuses on the bidding choices made by expert players. Sometimes that results from different bidding systems/gadgets that experts adopt. Still, it mostly results from the choices experts make in difficult decisions with hands on the border between two (or more) possible bids.

Over the next few months, I will chime in on how Ron and I would bid the same hands, compare our results to the panel, and take time to discuss when our results greatly differ from the Bulletin standard bidding. I hope to prove that for a majority of the hands, Modern American will reach the same contracts as the Bulletin standard and/or the experts. This exercise will also provide Ron and me with feedback on whether our new approach has limitations, requires tweaking, or if we need to rethink our evaluation. Remember, we believe that Modern American is more strongly based on scientific decision making and less susceptible to relying on gut-feel to obtain above-average results.
